Endogenous depression is a biologically caused depression without any identified psychological causes. It occurs presumably due to either genetic causes or a malfunction in the brain chemistry. It is a clinical syndrome that includes a persistent sad mood or loss of interest in activities that persists for at least 2 weeks in the absence of external precipitants. It is not always triggered by an upsetting or stressful event. Features may include change in eating habits, insomnia, early morning wakening, lack of interest, low self-esteem, depressed mood, fatigue and suicidal thoughts.

Useful herbs

Acorus gramineus

To bleeding gums (root powder); in the treatment of digestive problems - particularly gastralgia and diarrhoea, cough, bronchial asthma, neurasthenia, depression, epilepsy, body parasites, dermatosis and haemorrhoids(root)

Anthriscus cerefolium

For cleansing the liver and kidneys, for settling the digestion and in treating poor memory and mental depression (herb); in the treatment of dropsy, arthritis and chronic skin ailments (juice); for slow-healing wounds, as an eyewash to treat sore or inflamed eyes (leaves)

Apium graveolens

To treat diarrhoea, dysentery, hoarseness of voice, gravels, indigestion and loss of appetite, and impurity of breast-milk caused, bronchitis (seed decoction); rheumatism (fruit); as a very potent aphrodisiac (seed); arthritis, bruises, dropsy, dysmenorrhea, gout, hoarseness, indigestion, depression, nervous affections resulting from the degeneration of sheathing, scurvy and sores.

Artemisia absinthium

For sluggish stomach and gall bladder function, prolaped stomach, anemia, anxiety, parturition, chlorosis, depurifying the body, chronic fever, flatulence, gastric pain, gout, urinary stones, heartburn, indigestion, leukemia, depression and migraines.

Ballota nigra

For treating problems connected with the respiratory system, convulsions, low spirits and the menopause, in the treatment of nervous dyspepsia, travelling sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, arthritis, gout, scanty menstrual flow and bronchitis.

Borago officinalis

In depression, fever, skin and mucous membrane inflammations, wounds and as an aid with urinary infections in juveniles and the old; may help in menopause.

Calamintha nepeta

Used to treat depression, insomnia and painful menstruation.

Cannabis sativa

In hydrocele (bark); anorexia, urinary tract problems (including bladder inflammation), cancer and tumors, common cold, corns, cough, depression and as a psychological aid, glaucoma, gonorrhea, nausea, for sores, varicose veins, gout and rheumatism, in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal, anthrax, asthma, blood poisoning, constipation caused by debility or fluid retention

Corynanthe yohimbe

For general sexual dysfunction in men and women, sexual dysfunction caused by selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), and as an adjunct to conventional antidepressants for refractory depression.

Hedyotis diffusa

Biliousness, debility, depression, depurative, asthma, jaundice, internal ulcers, appendicitis and toothache; Used externally for snakebite, boils, abscesses and severe bruising.

Hypericum perforatum

As an antidepressant, in mania, apathy, hypersomnia, and insomnia, anorexia, psychomotor retardation, depression feelings of worthlessness, anxiety disorders and aids in healing wounds and ulcers (for nervous disorders. the drug may take as long as a month before any effects are noticed). It is also used for menopausal changes triggering irritability and anxiety. In addition to neuralgic pain, it will ease fibrositis, sciatica and rheumatic pain.

Externally it is a healing and anti-inflammatory remedy. As a lotion it will speed the healing of wounds and bruises, varicose veins and mild burns. The oil is especially useful for the healing of sunburn. It has the calming properties, useful in treating bedwetting, insomnia, and other nervous conditions, as well as some form of melancholy. An oil extract of the herb can be taken for stomach ache, colic, intestinal problems, and as an expectorant for the congestion in the lungs. A tea made from the flowers is good for anemia, headache, insomnia, jaundice, chest congestion, and catarrh. A tea made from the herb has been used for uterine cramping and menstrual difficulties. The oil extract also make a good external application for burns, wounds, sores, bruises, and other skin problems.

Jasminum officinale

Applied to corns and ear discharges (leaf juice); ringworm infection (root); depression, nervous tension, impotence, frigidity, menstrual disorders and weak digestion (oil).

Lamium album

For diseases of the upper respiratory tract, depression, digestive disorders, inflammations of the prostate, for abnormal vaginal discharge and is sometimes taken to relieve painful periods, kidney and urinary tract and in skin maladies (such as wounds and rashes).In haemorrhages of the uterus, nose etc (decoction); in bleeding piles, against fluor albus, chlorosis and debilities (flowers)

Nardostachys grandiflora

Used in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria and convulsive affections, nervous indigestion, insomnia, depression and tension headaches; heart disorders and as a stimulant (root). Externally, it is used as a deodorant and to treat rashes.

Nardostachys jatamansi

For restlessness and hyperactivity in juveniles (jatamansone); for convulsions and arrhythmia of the heart. It is a substitute for valerian, Valeriana officinalis, and used in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria and convulsive affections, nervous indigestion, insomnia, depression and tension headaches. Externally, it is used as a deodorant and to treat rashes.

Ocimum basilicum

Sweet basil acts principally on the digestive and nervous systems, easing flatulence, stomach cramps, colic and indigestion. It is taken internally in the treatment of feverish illnesses, poor digestion, nausea, abdominal cramps, gastro-enteritis, migraine, insomnia, depression and exhaustion. Externally, they are used to treat acne, loss of smell, insect stings, snake bites and skin infections. The mucilaginous seed is given in infusion in the treatment of gonorrhoea, dysentery and chronic diarrhoea. It is remove film and opacity from the eyes also. The root is used in the treatment of bowel complaints in children. Extracts from the plant are bactericidal and are also effective against internal parasites.

Operculina turpethum

Snakebite antidote and scorpion sting (root); dropsy, gout, chronic constipation, arthritis, jaundice, depression, leprosy and spleen enlargement, for giddiness, vomiting and fainting; for the treatment of piles (leaves);

Pinellia ternata

Strengthens the spleen, very effective in controlling nausea and vomiting, for coughs with thin watery phlegm and gastritis (root); To treat cancer, depression, dermatosis, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gonorrhea, headache, hiccup, insomnia, jaundice , leukemia, leukorrhea, nausea, nephrosis, pharyngosis, psoriasis, rheumatism, snakebite.

Verbena officinalis

In liver and gallbladder complaints, chronic eczema and bronchitis,insomnia, menstrual pain, in the treatment of headaches, fevers, nervous exhaustion, depression, insufficient lactation (plant); in rheumatism, healing of wounds, for the swellings of womb (leaves)
